Type:   Basket
Name:   New Apotheke: D. Kokolopoulos and E. Lambraki Field, context 63
Area:   New Apotheke: D. Kokolopoulos and E. Lambraki Field
Title:   Room 5 - Deposit above foor 70
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   63
Date:   2016/06/07
Stratum:   15% tiles; 15% stones: 10% medium pebbles, 2% cobbles, 3% coarse pebbles
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish black. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is well sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   - 63 is better sorted, with fewer inclusions and is more reddish soil than 55 and 62; 63 is harder than 55 and 62.
- Finds collected: glass, stone vessel, bone, shell bezel
- After excavation of context 55 still seem to be slightly elevated above floor surface (due to presence of tiles in matrix below), therefore further excavation needed in room to reach floor level and context 63 opened.
- Mixed: red and black soil - small amount of ash
- More ash in W. side (abuttting western wall)
- Basin found in NE corner of room
- Coordinates of basin: -298. 087 E, 1485.413 N, 58.533 H
- Excavating context 63, it seems that we are now moving down on a floor level, as the earth underneath the ecvavated area is more reddish and well-consolidated with fewer inclusions.
- Worked shell (bezel for ring?) found near N. wall in center.
- Coordinates of besel: -300.248 E, 1485. 566 N, 58.463 H.
- Base of overturned and broken pottery vessel discovered next to E. end of threshold in NW corner of room; this is partially underneath a boulder; more fragments of stone vessel found in this context , including one large fragment with piece of iron still attached.
Small finds: glass, stone vessel, bone, shell bezel, bronze belt tongue
8/6/16
- More fragments of stone vessel (pietra olare) revealed in SW corner of Room 5, likely in situ, as these seam to be resting on a floor surface. These were photographed.
- Patch of ashy grey soil revealed next to E. wall (wall 52) along middle of wall; this may be a hearth.
- Upon excavation of 63 to the W. edge of the room, it seems that structure 64, a built stone feature, extends all the way to wall 50, at least on its N. side. This may be a staircase landing.
- Upon excavation of entire room, we seem to still be slightly elevated above floor surface in some areas, particularly in S. half of room; this will be excavated as a new context
