Title:   Room 6 - Debris Deposit on Eastern Side of Room
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   65
Date:   2016/06/07
Stratum:   At top level, 50% stone, but overall roughly 30% stone and 10% tile; less than 5% other ceramic material.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We opened context 65 as a continuation of the blackish earth layer, which we had thought cut into the "reddish layer". We articulated further what was then confirmed to be a wall (context 69) and uncovered further heavy stone and tile scatter just to its West (tile sample sizes: 0.08 x 0.11 x 0.08, 0.07 x 0.02 x 0.05; stone sample sizes: 0.23 x 0.16 x 0.12, 0.19 x 0.12 x 0.07, and some even bigger). In the section created, it then appeared that the "red layer" was actually quite shallow (9-10 cm in the North to 3 cm in the South), so it looked as though the "red layer" actually cut into the blackish deposit (but, as would later be revealed in context 68, the "red layer" was actually just red patches of mudbrick detritus). There was no clear change in soil: Rossana thought she might have detected a slight change to a more reddish soil, but context 65 was suspended more or less arbitrarily in order to achieve greater clarity and to shift attention to the "red layer" in the Western half of room 6. No small finds were collected, but Rossana did notice amongst our pottery a pitcher fragment dating to c. 11th century.
