Title:   Room 6 - Deposit with Mudbricks in Western Side
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   68
Date:   2016/06/07
Stratum:   Mixed with patches of reddish soil, likely associated with a few large pieces of mudbrick. 5% tile toward the top, less further down; less than 5% ceramic material; less than 5% rocks and pebbles.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   The "red layer" immediately turned out to be patches of mudbrick detritus, and we collected a few samples of extant mudbrick (e.g. 0.11 x 0.26 x 0.22, 0.10 x 0.13 x 0.07, 0.15 x 0.08 x 0.12). Otherwise the soil was not unlike that of context 65. One nail, a column base fragment, two pieces of glass and one small piece of bronze were found. After two passes in this context, it became evident that the gap between walls 60 and 61 was not solely due to a 2015 test trench, but is actually a doorway of Room 6. Relatedly, some floating stones from the middle of Wall 58 (just west of the large threshold-like stones) were removed, and the threshold-like stone itself also turned out to be floating. Our working hypothesis is that Walls 60, 61, and 58 are contemporaneous, forming a room that originally had two doors, one each on the South and North sides. But in a later phase, the North entryway was filled in. (Alternatively, however, depending on where the associated surface level had been in relation to these floating stones--perhaps removed by the 2015 excavation?-- this may not be a "renovation" closing the North entryway, but a reinforced threshold (?) or something else entirely.) After a few passes in this area, levelling the room to the depth of context 65 (i.e. up to Wall 69), we decided to change contexts, mostly for clarity and because we suspected that a floor surface might be imminent. The change in soil was very slight and gradual-- perhaps more reddish and higher clay content.
13.6.16 EJ: update on interpretation: Entryway in Wall 58 is not closed off in renovation phase, but the "threshold stones" likely belong to this phase-- a reinforcement of the entryway. Unknown whether entryway in southern wall (61 and 60) received similar treatment because this material was removed by the 2015 test trench.
