Title: | Room 6 - Dump Fill Coming Down on Surface Debris
Category: | Deposit | |
Notebook: | 1111 | |
Context: | 71 | |
Date: | 2016/06/08 | |
Stratum: | 5% bone concentrated toward the West; less than 5% ceramic material at first, but ~5 cm down became more concentrated, 5-10%; sparse tiny pebbles or other inclusions, except in East side, which held a heavy concentration of tile and stone up to ~50%.
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes: | We opened context 71 as we thought that we might be approaching a floor. At first, there as very little ceramic material from this deposit, but a lot of bone, including large bovine (?) pieces concentrated in the West, and a very heavy concentration of tile and stone in the East. On the second pass through the area, the ceramic debris became notably heavier; three buckets were collected in total. Tile remained relatively concentrated to the East side. In the third pass, we uncovered what appears to be surface debris in the East side: heavy scatter with relatively flat lying sherds. Thirteen pieces of glass, iron slag, two nails, charcoal, a metal blade, lapis lacedaemonius, a bronze strip, and two ambiguous pieces of iron were collected from this context. Having reached this presumed surface debris, we stopped excavation in room 6 after this point in order to begin digging elsewhere on site. NA-22: complete iron knife NA-23: lapis lacedaemonius NA-39: iron slag
