Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the SW. The soil color is very dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We opened this context, which formed one of the sides of Cut 871, to investigate how it related to the fill to the north (context 1005 and the layer beneath it). This layer, with very abundant tile, had been visible in the scarp of the pit formed by 871, but the top of the tile layer was exposed in the removal of Context 1005. Although the soil in Context 1005 appeared to continue deeper, our pickman, Thanasis, requested that we close 1005 at an arbitrary level in order to remove this tile deposit to determine how the two adjoining areas related. The tiles continue in the western scarp, so we initially thought they might be part of the lining of the pit. Instead, we now believe it is an earlier layer cut by the pit.
Some of the tiles in this fill are not very fragmented, although the major part consists of smaller tile sherds of approximately 10 cm long. After Thanasis removed the tile from the N scarp of Cut 871, it became clear that the tile dump predated Context 1005 just north of it, as the tiles continue below the currently unexcavated soil under 1005. Therefore, we will close this context and proceed with removing the soil under context 1005. The remainder of the tile deposit will be removed in a later context.
