Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the W. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This fill is located below the tile destruction layer 1046. We excavated it in order to be able to understadt the tile fills, which overlaid it and were related to tile destruction layer 1046, and in order to understand the activities to the south of the Turkish house in general. This context is extremely imporant for th interpretation of activities in the area, since it is first large continuous deposit in this part of the excavation area.
This context included a large amount of pottery, some broken tile, very high quantity of bone and charcoal, glass, small pebbles, and even one carbonized seed. At the lower level, pieces of mortar were found, too. The layer also yielded a lot of charcoal, and we collected large pieces by hand and also collected two buckets of soil for wet sieving. Since the context includes large quantities of building material and ceramics, bone, and charcoal, it might represent a refuse dump.
The context was quite large, so Thanasis and Thanasis dug it into two passes, each approximately 5-10cm deep. Underneath we came down upon a later of tile, which is quite thick, being visible in the western scarp of Cut 890. This layer, however, continues also under S1047 and the apsidal layer made of cobbles to the south, and hence, we will stop digging in this area in order to remove these superimposed contexts first.

After Guy Sanders had examined the pottery, he concluded that it was different from the dumped material in context 1046. The pottery included some imitation N African lamps and the coarse wares were different from those found in context 1046.
