Lot:   Lot 2013-008
Stratum:   60% inclusions; tile, ceramic sherds, bone, charcoal, glass, bronze, iron, slag, fine pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the E. The soil color is very dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This context is the removal of a dumped layer of tile and some soil, which was visible in the western scarp of pit 890. This context had very abundant tile and ceramic sherds, as well as animal bone and charcoal. Because of the bone and charcoal, we took two 10 L samples for water sieving. This dumped fill likely represents the clean-up of some type of destruction event and it will be interesting to see how it can be related to the other tile-filled dumped layers above it in this area. We excavated it as a part of a larger program of exploring the Late Romam activities south of the Turkish house.
The tiles are fragmentary and somewhat smaller than those in the higher dumped tile layers, at 0.10-0.15x0.05-0.10. The context also produced much bone and glass--including several very large fragments of window glass. Several coins were also found, in addition to iron nails and other small pieces of metal. Several complete or nearly complete lamps were also discovered. We also found three joining fragements of a worked bone plaque.
Since the deposit is very deep, we dug it in several passes, each approximately 10-20 cm thick. The dump clearly consists of material from a destruction elsewhere, given the huge number of tile fragments and the high quanitity of carbon and other waste materials like animal bone. We took two 10 L samples of soil for wet sieving.

Today we continued digging the large dumped fill. We have decided to leave a thin margin of soil next to the N-S robbing trench near the SE corner of the Turkish house (cut 1041), because we are now wondering if these layers of dumped fill are related to the wall which once filled this robbing trench. We will leave a small baulk next to the west side of the robbing trench, the upper part of which was excavated as 1031. The robbing trench appears to continue to the south, on the other side of cut 870, but we have not yet excavated this are becaue we need to keep it as a support for the wheelbarrow ramp. Since the strata on the E and W of it are quite different, Guy Sanders wonders whether the wall was in use when all the material was dumped here, just east of the western baulk.
Today we also decided to sieve 100% of the soil, since the context had already yielded many coins and is extremely important to the interpretation of the activities in the area. The soil continued to produce many tiles, sherds, and animal bones, as well as glass and a number of small bronze and iron objects. We found a second worked bone plaque in the sieve, which is nearly identical to the one we found yesterday and from a similar, but lower, location. The soil is somewhat ashy, and large pieces of charcoal kept coming up, so we decided to take another 10 L sample for wet sieving.
As we continued digging, we noticed a sherd of Byzantine brown glaze in the pottery bucket. This occurred while the men were digging near the edge of cut 809, which forms the southern boundary of context. We believe this sherd must be contamination from the pit, but we will need to examine the rest of the pottery after it is washed.

Today we continued removing the large tile dump. Workmen had already found 4 more coins before we arrived in the morning. Due to the continued presence of charcoal and bone and somewhat ashy appearance of the soil, we decided to take another water sieve sample from near the location (and roughly at the same elevation) as one of the previous samples yesterday. WE have now taken four 10 l samples from two separate areas--two near the top level of the context and two near the bottom level of the context.
IN the morning light in western baulk of the excavation area we can see a dark, carbon-filled lense (% cm thick) within this stratum and the lense has some tiles throughout it, so we were not able to distinguish it while digging, but out second set of water sieving samples came from approximately the same elevation. We also took a third, additional, water sieve sample from top level close to the central-eastern edge of the deposit, because we came upon a pocket of darkened soil with charcoal and seeds.
In the center of the bottom level of the context we came upon a circular depression, which at first seemed like a small pit. Thanasis and Thanasis explored it, and it turned out that it was not a pit, but only a small depression, which was filled with the same soil as this context. Therefore, we cleaned it as a part of the current context. After removing the fill we came down upon compact yellowish brown layer with frequent small charcoal inclusions with no tile in it. Thus, we stopped digging at this point. The context yielded 18 buckets of pottery, 3 buckets of bone, lot of charcoal, glass, iron and bronze artifacts, and worked bone.
We discovered an iron buckle of the same shape as MF 2001-32, but much smaller in size.
