Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We begin 1081 on completion of 1076. This former is a deposit of softer sediment between harder to E and W. This is the putative fill of a putative cut for a putative N-S channel. A fragment of the schist opus sectile [as we have found in higher deposits in this area], and then of the pebble pavement [likewise], and another.
E of the block in the NE corner, the removal of 1081 exposes more of the hard concretey red sediment to the E below--so we have chosen our order [of excavation] correctly. Thus far, however, there is no block but this block. Bits and pieces of nice red Roman pottery. The absence of glass thus far is striking; perhaps there will be some from the screen.
Below 1081, to the W of The Block, a harder sediment. A bronze nail shaft from this area. One piece of the base of a glass vessel, quite some time later.
Many more marble fragments at the S end than at the N; also to the S the matrix is looser and blacker but seems to be the same deposit. Fewer cobbles also to the S.
We close 1081 when all of the loose, dark sediment has been removed; some of it extended up and over the stone foundation to the SE.
