Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This context is thought to be the floor of a Late Roman house. Prior excavation in this area in 2007 yielded 5th century material and a marble portrait head face down in a pit in the SW corner of the room. The context is bounded to the west by a trench of uneven width (possibly a foundation trench) running along the east side of wall 5218, to the north by wall w35, to the east by wall ----, and to the south by wall ----. The room was entered by a door in the south wall (previous excavations uncovered part of a stone door frame).
The floor is composed of hard-packed clayey sand and is variable in thickness. There is a depression in the west half of the context (see points 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 on the top plan), which may indicate the presence of a pit somewhere below the floor. The soil is moderately sorted with a few medium and coarse pebbles. Several rounded pebbles 2-4 cm in diameter were found with concrete adhering to the back; these were likely part of a pebble mosiac floor. A small (2cm x 5cm x 6cm) piece of mosaic floor was recovered by the workmen. This used smaller pebbles ( <1cm) and is similar to other flooring recovered in the surrounding area in earlier sessions.
Inclusions comprised a moderate amount of pottey, charcoal (mostly in clumps ~2cm in diameter), and a few bones. Glass and metal were very rare (only ~1 piece each). One unusual find was a worked piece of unknown material, an arch about 0.2cm wide and 1.5cm long, broken into 2 pieces. It may be part of a ring or the rim of a vessel. Several tile fragments were also found.
Three new deposits were revealed by the excavation of this context. In the SE corner of the room is an ashy black area. We plan to take a sample of this for flotation. The rest of the southern half of the area is softer and slightly redder than 1142 and the northern area is hard-packed and greyer. The boundary between 1142 and the contexts below it is sharp for the ashy area and the softer southern area, and less clear for the harder deposit to the north.
