Stratum:   medium greyish brown silt with roughly 70% large inclusions: sub-rounded stones, rounded stones, large rough stones (up to 18 x 15 cm), many tiles (2-3cm thick, pale orange fabric), large fragments of coarseware pottery and pithoi, brick, marble, bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   1145 is a pit deposit below 1141 and 1139. This roughly ovoid deposit includes large pieces of tile (e.g., 2-3 cm thick, with one measuring 29 x 20 x 2.5 cm), large stones both rounded and rough (up to 18 x 15 cm dimensions), large pieces of bone and coarseware pottery; several large fragments of marbled (largest is 20 x 12 cm); light yellow pithos sherds; chert; chunk of mosaic pebble floor at depth of 80 cm; marble architectural frame.
The large number and quantity of inclusions intimates possible destruction debris in this deposit. This might be the case because of a chunk of floor plaster mixed into the pit debris in addition to other large inclusions of coarse building materials. The large size of the materials indicates that this material was deposited soon after its period of use.
At a depth of 52 cm, a measurement taken from the northern part of the pit, abutting Wall 5334, the soil is, unsurprisingly, moister than at upper levels. At 60 cm, the southwestern scarp is producing numerous roots from the nearby fig tree. A large rock emerged on the south border of the pit at a depth of 105 cm from top of scarp, possibly collapsed in from the Wall above; measuring 45 x 28 x 30 cm.
The pit finished at a depth of 84.75m MASL, over a sloping layer of more compact red earth (sloping from W to E). We believe this underlying deposit was poured into the pit from the western edge soon after the pit was dug. Our next step will be to remove this sloping red earth in order to arrive at the bottom of the pit.
The pit produced, in addition to the inventoried objects and coin, 39 substantial pieces of marble (with a representative piece measuring 23.5 x 13.5 x 2 cm). In smaller quantities, pieces of obsidian and schist.
