Title:   Ashy deposit below floor 1142
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1147
Page:   0
Date:   2013/05/28
Stratum:   Inclusions of ash, charcoal, plaster fragments, some pottery, some glass, some bone, pebbles (about 15% total)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This deposit is located underneath the hard-packed floor (context 1142). It is ashy in appearance and looks to have a high carbon content; since the deposit is fairly small, we plan to take a flotation sample of 100% of the deposit.
The deposit is moderately sorted, with medium and coarse pebbles being the most common stone size. Most stones are angular and spherical, although there are a few very rounded pebbles that may have come from a pebble mosaic floor. Thin roots are also present. Other inclusions consist of small and thin fragments of painted plaster (red and white, < 0.5 cm thick), tiny amounts of glass and bone, and ceramic sherds. Some seeds also appear to be present.
Below this context is a new deposit, identified by a change in soil color to a more yellowish hue.
There is no recognizable hearth in the deposit area, and the deposit doesn't seem to contain enough ash to have been used for cooking. It most likely postdates the levelling fill below floor 1142 and predates the floor itself.

Although the pottery from this deposit was dated to Early Roman (mid-1st century CE), stratigraphy suggests that it postdates context 1148, which was dated to the Middle Roman period based on pottery. Since we recovered very little pottery from 1147, it seems wisest to date this deposit to the Middle Roman period and to allow the stratigraphic date to take precedence over the pottery date.
