Stratum:   pebbles, pottery
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish yellow. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This morning we moved west of well 742, to the area between the well and the ashlar under tile structure 1158 and the western scarp of Nezi excavation area. This entire area has been exposed since Session 3 2012. We hope to excavate it down to find the western edge of lime pit 882 and possibly a continuation of the other surfaces and deposits we found east of the well.
We began by removing the skin balk running E-W along the north side of cut 687, a narrow strip of projecting soil left last year, presumably as protection against contamination from the robbing trench. After pottery reading, we'll be able to list it as "same as" 684, the fill in cut 687 (late 11th-mid 12th cent by pottery), or 897, the deposit to the north (early 12th century by pottery).
11 June 2013
With a pottery date of the second half of the 5th - 7th century, we have decided to equate this material with the deposit to the north (=897) rather than the cut fill.
