Description:   The soil color is light brownish red. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This context represents removal of the large ashlar which was under tile feature 1158, located immediately south of well 742. The ashlar was 0.60 x 0.70 and 0.37-0.42 m deep. As such, it is much larger than any other stones in this area, and it is roughly hewn on all sides. We think it is quite likely that this ashlar was from an earlier wall in close proximity, possibly even an earlier phase of wall 366 (as exposed in robbing trench 1171; see also notes for fill 1167).
We cleaned several centimeters of soil beneath the ashlar and exposed a layer of flat tiles under the entire area, possibly continuing to the east and a bit to the south.
Unfortunately, there was no pottery or other finds in this context.
