Title:   Debris dump fill west of wall 1222
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1231
Page:   0
Date:   2013/06/12
Stratum:   Inclusions of tile, plaster, ceramic sherds, pebbles, cobbles, lime cement, metal
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This deposit is a narrow band of what appears to be debris fill dumped along the west face of wall 1222. It contained many large pieces of broken roof tile, espcially towards the southern end, and several large pieces of limey concrete (largest piece ~ 0.20 m x 0.10 m x 0.10 m). These types of materials may suggest that construction activity was taking place in this area.
This deposit came down upon a hard-packed greyish surface -- possibly a preparation for the floor visible to the south. This surface appears to continue below the areas to the north and east, so we will remove the dump-fill-like context in these areas next.
This deposit may occupy an area that was originally filled by a single course of stones extending west of wall 1222 which were later robbed out. It could also be filling an area of the floor that was destroyed by a dumping operation or by erosion. It is distinguished from the other areas of dump fill around it by its softer compaction and the frequency of tile pieces, several of which are oriented vertically along the edges of the deposit.
20/6: Little pottery was recovered from this small deposit. Based on its stratigraphic relationship to 1226 and 1233 above and below it, it probably dates to the early 5th century and represents a discrete installment in the many dumping activities that appear to have been occuring around wall 1222 at that period.
