Stratum:   Tiles (20%), pottery, carbon, small pebbles and stones (max 0.10m), metal, glass, bone, wall plaster
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish red. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   We open this context as what appears to be an ovoid desposit possibly cut into the more compact surfaces around it (see notes for 1240). We are pulling out very large (0.15x0.20x0.03-0.04 thick) broken tiles in assorted fabrics and much denser pottery than what was in the levelling dump fill above, and we have yet to find any painted wall plaster or other limey substance as we did in 1227. (Later, we do, but it is in much smaller pieces and fewer quantities than in the higher elevations.)
At the bottom of this deposit, Thanassis exposed a probable surface of flat laying tiles at 85.04 masl. The remaining sides of this putative 'cut', after removal of the deposit, don't appear very cut-like, so we have decided not to give it a cut number for the time being. Instead, it may be where the lower surface has worn away leaving a soft spot, or, as Guy suggested, a formation from the cave-in of the cistern below (visible down from well 742). The top of the not-cut is irregularly shaped, with gradually sloping sides in the top half and sharp vertical cut in the lower half down to the tile surface. Exposed at the south end of the deopsit is a large cut stone, in line with another larger stone set just north.
