Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This context is the upper surface covering the western half of the excavation area between wall 1222 at west and robbing trench 1171 at east, exposed at the bottom of context 1227. The surface is only of middling quality, not as nicely constructed, solid, or level as the lower surface which we are continuing to exposed beneath it. At the upper elevation of the surface, it slopes quite severely from SW down to NE. Thanassis noted that the surface runs up against the east face of wall 1222, and he even detected an edge for the floor along the line of the wall north of well 742, so it seems the wall and this floor were in use at the same time.
The relationship of the floor to the well is somewhat less clear, as to whether the surface runs up to the well or is cut by the well. Hopefully on Monday we can remove more of the well structure, as well as the stone feature south of well 742 (which seems to be resting on the same dump fill as 1227), to see if the surface also runs all the way up to the wall on the south side of the well. We couldn't remove these first because we were waiting for James to draw them.

We continued to excavate this context up to the east edge of well 742 and of the stone structure to its south. As we got close, more limey plaster bits emerged in the soil, and it looked as if the soil deposit under the stone feature is not the same as what we had been excavating after all. As a result, we decided not to remove it this season in interest of time. It appears to extend south into the Byzantine room which is has not yet been excavated to this level yet.
Also exposed south of well 742, along the west edge of context 1246, was a line of large, very roughly cut stones extending south from the well, under the layer of soil which is under the stone feature. These stones may be the top of a cistern or another well feature, and are rather steeply sloped down to the north.
