Stratum:   Inclusions; 30% medium pebbles. Some larger, squarish stones. Roots in soil. Ash and carbon fragments less than 2%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. Bottom slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   We begin digging in the pit south of the foundation trench in the north of our area. We dig the south half of the pit because the soil is more yellow and most likely sits on top of ashy layer dug in basket 146.
*We left a martyr around the pit because of earlier excavation of basket 145. The pit cuts into this layer.*
Bill is finding pottery, bone, and a bit of mosaic floor.
There are many roots in the soil which are disturbing the layer and confrim that this was indeed a pit.
We are coming down on several patches of charcoal and the soil seems to be getting lighter and more compact. There is a clear red patchy layer in the north end of the pit.
We will end this basket and determine whether or not to dig the red patch or continue down into the charcoal patch area.
Found bone and pottery.
