Notes:   24-05-07
After we finished doing basket 169, a pit was revealed. We decided to start excavating it in basket 171.
The pit cuts the destruction layer that is visible to the north, east, and south east of B171. The top fill of the pit has soft, very dark balsck soil and it contains a significant amount of large and small stones and tile fragments.
We had to stop digging the basket because it started to rain heavily.
25-05-07
We hoped to continue with the same basket the next day (25-5-07).
But because it rained all night and day at the 25-05-07 we did not excavate at all.
29-05-07
We started working again on B171 on Monday 29-05-07. It had been raining heavily the whole weekend, so the soil was not yet dry. The soil was very soft and dark brownish black with many inclusions.
The soil in B171 included a large quantity of stones (boulders, cobbles, pebbles) and of tile fragments, most of which seems to have been manufactured in bright yellow clay . Many pottery sherds and bones were also discovered, as well as few sea shells, 1 bag with glass fragments (from the sieve) and 1 bag with metal objects (from the sieve)
We also discovered coin 2007-363 [266.92 E/ 1004.08N/ 86.59 El]
We had some difficulty in identifying the cut of the pit in the South side of the pit. Here the soil is very soft. We are going to examine this matter in the following baskets of the fill.
We decided to close B171, when we reached soil of different colors, which we are going to study in separate baskets. In the South part of the bottom of B171 the soil is hard , dark brownish white. In the North and North-east part of the bottom of B171 it is soft , dark brownish white. And in the West part of the bottom of B171 it is very soft and very dark brownish black similar to the soil in B171. We decided to remove this last soft dark black soil in a separate basket from B171, in B177, in case it is related with the NS wall at 266.44E, with which it is immediately adjacent .
