Context:   269

Date:   2008/05/10
Stratum:   40% tile, cement flecks, rounded and sub rounded pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   The foundation 266 packing 268 turns lighter and contains cement west of the pipe cut 261. The light yellowish brown silty sand soil is firmly packed with much the same inclusion as 268 but in a lighter matrix with fleck of cement. This is most likely a cementy layer through which the wall cutting (272) was dug, probably the same as that to the south (265), which is underneath the level of the wall superstructure. That is, the top of the foundation course (266) is 87.59, and the top of the cementy fill to the S of 243 (265) is 87.25. The cementy fill N of 243 (dep 250) ran into the wall break (254) and may be entirely different - viz. post pipe installation. However - the matrix N of 243, (250), ran from 87.47 to 87.14, the wall break portion of this fill ran from 87.34 to 87.24, while that to the S of 243, (265), ran from 87.25 to 87.16, which is well within the elevation parameters of dep 250. Possibly the cementy layer through which the wall was cut was redeposited much later, that is, after the pipe was punched through wall 243. This is by no means certain.
Towards the western portion the fill is deeper than that to the east, and has larger concrete inclusions, up to .15m. There are flecks of concrete present in the strosis beneath the cut (272) throughout but tapering off to the east. The wall return going N of 243 (foundation only) has a small amount of concrete cisible in its matrix. Most likely the surface through which the trench was cut contained the cementy material and this was re-deposited in relation to its original extraction point by the builders of wall 243. Therefore - 268=269
