Title:   Pit fill, uppermost stratum

Context:   286

Date:   2008/05/15
Stratum:   large subangular and angular boulders, tiles, cobbles and pebbles of mixed shapes and sizes, pottery, architectural members 80%
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the SE. The soil color is dark yellowish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We open this context to remove a fill of boulders and tile that lies to the W of a N-S wall and a robbing trench of the same wall. This fill spills over on top of this N-S wall and on top of where we expect we might find a robbing trench for this wall.
As we remove this context down to the ground level around it, we find that it does overlie/abut the wall and robbing trench to the E. We also find that this context cuts the soil all around it, including the soil just W of said wall. This cutting is circular and consistent with a cut for a pit or well. We finish removing the parts of this context that spill out over the cut, and then continue to remove the context inside the cutting of the pit. We decide at this point to begin sieving everything from inside the pit.
Note: We toss pottery and keep nothing from the 'spillover' soil once we realize we have a pit cutting, just in case of possible contamination.
We continue excavating this context 16 May 2008. It becomes quite clear that this cutting is very deep, so we take the decision, for practical purposes, to suspend excavation of this context. In the N, the cut has become irregular. It is likely we in face have missed the cut here and overdug a bit. In the N here, there are large cobbles protruding into the pit, either because we missed the cut above, or because the cut here becomes irregular for some reason.
We close and take an elevation at our arbitrary stopping point.
