Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the E. Bottom slope of the context is uneven down to the EThe soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Top elevation (cont).: Slight, though steeper to the NE.
EXCAVATION NOTES:
B3 is mixed in color but dug all in one context due to the consistancy of the compaction, it is all extrememly soft. Mixed in color - patches of dark black, light yellowish brown and pinkish brown. All soil in this deposit very soft. On average inclusions comprise 10%--roots, shells, ceramic and marble fragments, a range of boulders to medium pebbles--but poorly sorted throughout. Closer to E-W wall, inclusions are 30-40% (boulders and cobbles).
Disturbances to be expected due to earlier modern digging of holes for concrete foundations supporting the modern fence posts (see plan). The concrete overlies B3 and is in fact cemented to it and the E-W wall. Part of the E-W wall was destroyed in removing one of the concrete bases.
Some marble fragments were found, several of which are worked. The first (10 x 10 cm) has a series of four concentric quarter-circles in one corner. The second (16 x 15 cm) has two horizontal moldings. (These two given as examples; see sketches after plan.) Perhaps they were thrown up in fill from the 1960s excavations to the N.?
Workmen instructed to clean-up after removing B3.
Several different contexts are emerging under B3. Two harder and lighter patches on the E-W wall and maybe a harder and lighter patch to the N. of E-W wall (right alongside it) toward the E. end of B3. Soil under B3 is otherwise different colors with no true borders. Possibly fill deposited in a different event than B3.
B3 defined by its heavier inclusion of of many large stones (boulders and cobbles). Other than the harder and lighter patches, the soil under B3 is variously sandier and less soft. Still some very soft dark brown soil in W corner--some remaining B3? No cobbles however. Will sweep up and re-evaluate before proceeding further.
