Stratum:   The soil compaction is loose but more compacted than 440. Pottery (including roof tiles), small and medium pebbles (angular and subangular), nail, glass, lead. 40% inclusions.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 441 is underneath 440 and it is bordered by the north scarp, by trench B54 on the east, on the south it goes up to 1011.75 and on the west by the scarp created from previous excavation. The soil in this context has a darker color than context 440 and it is slightly more compacted. The color of the soil is homogeneous in the entire of the context apart from the northern part where Panos noted that it has a lighter color. On the southeast corner of the context there is a concentration of pottery (broken sherds probably from one vessel) and also bones and teeth. In this context Panos took out some boulders in addition to the pebbles. Also in this context we found larger fragments of rooftiles (not collected).
In the southeast corner we begin to see what may be the remains of a hearth at 263.83 E / 1011.89 N / 86.89 H. At the same level we found a large cache (see above) of pottery, notable cooking ware at 263.89 E / 1011.06 N / 86.98 H.
2 April 2009
Yesterday we stopped working in context 441 because of the rain and the context was covered with nylon in order to protect it from getting wet. In the area of the possible hearth we could see the remains of ash and small patches of a yellowish soil (maybe clay). Also note the proximity of the possible hearth with the cache of pottery (cooking ware) and bones.
We resumed work in this context. We began with a light sweep of the area because the area wa disturbed from walking. Our goal was to clarify what is going on around the possible hearth and define the extent of a more reddish brown soil that seems to be revealed at the bottom of this context.
We began by continuing the removal of the blackish dirt. Panos noted that there is a blondish clay on the north end that is ismilar to the blondish clay just to the south (which was revealed by 439). The blackish soil goes underneath this. Below the blackish soil is a reddish soil that runs under. In consultation with Guy we decided to stop taking out the rest of the black soil and remove both blond clays so that er can have a clearer sense of the layers of stratigraphy. Note that while digging in this context yesterday Panos revealed the outline of a pit (its eastern side, it remains to be excavated in a different context). We added a bottom plan in order to show where work stopped and to explain the differences in the soil.
The reason we stopped at the lower limits of the context was to make sure we could get the remnants of a previous excavation scarp down to the floor under 411. We decided to stop digging in this context when Panos exposed a small area of the red soil that lies underneath the blackish brown soil of this context (elevation on this lower level is 86.90).
