Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This context is located south of context 442. It was on a higher elevation than 442 and it was characterized by a light yellowish brown soil/clay. We suspected that the black soil was underneath this lighter soil and we decided to remove it in order to expose the black soil in its entirety. This was part of our greater goal of exposing the black soil in the area and removing it as a separate context. The excavation of this context revealed a confusing situation. Panos is digging what appears to be mixed soil of black dirt and yellow clay in pockets. A large patch of yellow clay was revealed approximately in the center of this context. We are uncertain of the exact relationship between the black and yellow soil and especially of the formation process. We are not certain about the sequence of events that led to the formation of this mixed soil. After discussing with A. Carter it seems possible that the black soil continues under the yellow soil and that we probably have a mixed layer above a more clear layer of black soil. Right now we asked Panos to investigate around a bit more, try and see if there are more large patches of yellow clay and then decide how we will proceed.
We worked in this context until the end of the day and the situation is still not clear. On the SW part we revealed what seems to be ash. We are not sure if it extends more toward the S and what is its relationship to the black soil. On the mid-W side of the context we have a concentration of stones (revealed in 439) and they will be removed in a separate context (again, in an effort to clarify their relationship to the black soil). We will continue working in this context tomorrow.
3/4/09: We resumed excavation in this context this morning. We asked Panos to continue digging the mixed blondish soil (black soil mixed with yellow soil) and define its extent. Our goal is to remove this mixed soil and expose the areas with the black soil and the areas with the yellow clay. While digging Panos revealed to the southern part of this context a layer of ash. At this point we decided to close the context. At the bottom of the context different soils were exposed. In the N we exposed the blackish brown soil. In the mid-E we have a yellow clay. At the borders of this context there are three accumulations of stones. They seem to be at a higher elevation than the context we are digging and possibly the black and yellow soil goes underneath the rock piles. We suspect that the rock piles might be the remains of robbing activity and we decided to excavate them separately. We will follow the same method with the layer of ash and the yellow soil. They will be excavated as separate contexts.
