Stratum:   small and medium subangular pebbles, roof tiles, pottery, bones.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 458 is the black soil that we have been seeking to uncover by the removal of various dumped fill deposits (444, 445, 447, 448, 449, 454, 456, 457) W of B54. After having removed these deposits we now feel that we are in a position to follow the black soil and remove it. The context is bounded on the N by the excavation scarp, on the E by robbing trench B54, and on the S by robbing trench 451 and wall 366. We don't currently know the W extent of the soil, but one of our goals in excavating this soil is to determine how far to the W it goes in the Nezi field. In the N section previous black soil was excavated that we think is the same as 458 (namely 441). In this N part 441 revealed a small patch of reddish soil which is at a lower elevation that we believe may be a floor (also revealed by 411 and 443). 441 also revealed the remains of what we believe may be a hearth next to B54. We hope that, in this area, the removal of the black soil will reveal the extent of the reddish soil and clarify the position of the possible hearth. As we extend further to the S and W we will be looking to find the extent of the black soil and its stratigraphic and chronological relationship with the robbing activity in B54 and 451, along with the hearth structure 455 (*later note: this is now context 455*). Finally by excavating the black soil in its full extent we hope to unite the remains of the artificial scarp to the W of B54 created in 2008 by the excavation of contect 411 with the rest of the Nezi field to the W.
As we continue excavations we note that the area W of the possible hearth (revealed in 441) yields a number of large roof tiles and pottery fragments, which were similar to that found in this area with 441. After discovering a coin at E 262.08/N 1010.21/H 86.87 Panos recommended that we start dry-sieving since he thinks we are near a floor. We have also begun turning up large pithos fragments that we have seen in other contexts.
9/4/09: This morning we continue excavations, seeking the extent of the black soil in context 458. Yesterday afternoon we ceased dry-sieving as Panos felt that we had moved away from a clear floor under 458 to the S and W. Our excavations have followed the black soil all the way S to wall 366. We are now continuing further W and N toward the remains of the drain (426). As Panos digs around the drain he reveals a large number of ceramic and roof tile fragments. Our excavations continue to the NW past drain 426. To the W of drain 426 is a pebbly deposit. Panos scrapped around and determined that the black soil does not go under the pebbly deposit but probably went over it. We asked Panos to do a cleaning of the area to the S of the pebbly deposit to remove potential soil that had accumulated since the 2008 excavations. He will then continue to search for the limits of the black soil to the W. We can see that he will eventually find aboundary with a browner soil that is visible near the W scarp of the excavation area.
On the E side of the context, due W of the stones bisecting B54, Panos was looking for a division or cut between the black soil and a harder, browner soil there. In searching for a cut he found a softer patch of soil with larger inclusions of tile, stones, and even two large chunks of iron. It became clear that this soft patch of soil went under the hard brown soil uncovered by 458. We halted excavations of this soil, since we would need to remove the harder brown soil first. The two large pieces of iron have been catalogued with this context but will need to be associated with another context when this soil is eventually excavated.
Panos uncovered a coin at E 258.53/ N 1009.42/ H 86.88.
10/4/09: At the W end the context was bounded by a dumped fill of building materials (459) on the W and by a pebbly deposit on the N. This gave us the final boundaries of the black soil N of wall 366.
The removal of the black soil allows us to make several observations. In the NW of the context we now have the clear S boundaries of a red floor and what appears to be a cut for a robbing trench of the walls (though this will need to be confirmed by later excavations). The bulk of the context overlaid a harder, brown surface which may be an outdoor floor. At the few points where we have come below this brown soil we noticed a darker, softer soil with higher levels of inclusions. The drain (426) is now more clearly defined with the removal of black soil that lay between the stones of the drain. To the W of the drain we do not have the same clarity with regard to the black soil. Just to the W of the southernmost stones of the drain the black soil was deeper and overlaid a reddish black soil. In the N it abutted a pebbly deposit and in the W it abutted a pile of dumped fill (459). In the NW it abutted a brown soil mixed with some clay. We ceased excavation and will explore these new soil deposits and their interrelationships.
