Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 46

Title:   Pit fill, sixth stratum from top
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1100
Context:   46
Page:   0
Date:   2007/04/25
Stratum:   Inclusions 10-20%: roots, ceramic (pottery and tile), stone (boulders, cobbles, coarse pebbles, medium pebbles), marble, bone, carbon frags. Color of soil is mixed: very dark blackish brown, dark reddish brown, dark pinkish brown. Boulders lay at the E.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. Bottom slope of the context is level. The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   EXCAVATION NOTES:
This is the compact deposit of soil in the E 1/4 of the pit, revealed after the removal of B41.
A worked marble fragment was found along the E. side of the pit wall, next to the protruding stones. Photographs 2007-0039, 2007-0040.
The N. termination of the rocks continues to be vertically stacked as the stones protrude from the pit wall. More stones in the E. and SE. pit walls are appearing and might be curved with the curve of the pit cut. Is this real or just the effect of removing a few stones while digging?
The S. termination of the stones in the pit wall appears to be on-line with the E. termination of the tile scatter to the SE of the pit.
Contains a sherd that joins to sherd in B39 and sherd in B41 = these baskets deposited at the same time.
We stopped digging the pit because it was too hard for the workman to shovel dirt out of--we will resume once the surrounding contexts have been excavated to a more manageable level.
