Name:   Nezi Field, context 487
Area:   Nezi Field
Context Type:   Fill
Title:   fill of slumped depression
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1103
Context:   487
Page:   0
Date:   2009/04/28
Stratum:   60% small - larger pebbles, cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The deposit 487 was first identified by the content of grey that distinguished it from the surrounding deposit. Because of its circular shape and general dimensions it initially appeared to be the fill of a large pit. However, in the process of excavation the walls of the "pit" were revealed to slope gently towards the base, showing that the deposit fills a shallow depression rather than a pit. The base of the depression is very compact with numerous pebble inclusions giving the impression of an exterior surface that has slumped down. It is possible this slumping is due to a larger pit or well in the stratigraphy below the level of the pebbly depression.
There were a number of different featured that were exposed with the excavation of this context. On the NE there is a possible pit - it has a dark gray soil and inclusions of pottery. It is uncertain whether this pit was cut in the context that we just removed (487) or whether it is an impression of a "pit" that might lie underneath. We will excavate in order to determine its stratigraphic relationship with the various contexts.
The pebbly surface that has been exposed with the removal of 487 at the eastern part is cut. It is possible that this was cut for the construction of drain 426; however, it should be noted that no remains of the drain have been found.
Also at the western part of this context we revealed a different, more pinkish soil that is possibly related with the deposits visible to the west.
