Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 491 is a level layer of chunky material characterized by its white clay inclusions. This deposit is truncated to the south by the cut 272 associated with the 19th century boundary wall. The abutting deposit to the east, which has yet to be excavated, is actually softer than deposit 491, but because a pit with a significant concentration of snail shells in its fill is cut into the deposit and deposit 491 overlays the southern extent of the pit, it was decided that the harder deposit 491 is later in sequence than the abutting softer deposit. In the process of excavation further amounts of white clay were revealed and an iron crucible was recovered. Removal of deposit 491 has allowed for the identification of the cut in the layer beneath.
