Stratum:   A mix of soil and organic debris that has accumulated in this space (Room E, NB 228) since excavation ended here in 1961. Modern inclusions like beer bottle caps, plastic.
Description:   Bottom slope of the context is down to the The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Cleaning of this area began on 25-4-2007 at the S end of the room. The soft and organic-rich layer of accumulated debris was carefully picked off the harder surface below. Cleaning resumed today and the rest of the room was cleaned down to the more compact surface.
The more compact surface is lighter in color with tile fragments and sherds lying horizontally upon it. At the N end of the space/room, black ash is revealed on this surface. When excavation begins in this room, this black ash should be exacmined to see if it is not fill of a pit rather than a lens of ash on top of a floor surface. The cleaning basket also revealed two linear built features that run parallel to each other N-S in the west quarter of the room. These features, built of small cobbles, tiles and white lime mortar, closely but NOT exactly follow the orientation of the W wall of the room, built of large squared orthostates with packing of cobbles and tiles in between. The wall is founded on top of the western linear feature. These features appear on the plan drawn by Travlos (Corinth drawing 217) and appear to be a drain. Fill between these features remains to be excavated.
Priorities for excavation in this space -- 1) explore nature of possible drain and its relation to the greater area; 2) determine if floor of this room remains to be excavated or was removed in 1961; 3) determine phasing and relationships of exposed walls to the greater area.
