Stratum: | The soil has black ash, vitrified cooking ware, and is markedly darker and softer than the surrounding soil.
Description: | Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the EThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | We began clearing the soil in this area to determine if it is a separate context from the rest of the room at this level: it clearly is. We suspect, and later confirm, pit fill. We will sieve the soil because it looks to be clearly cutting the rest of the area: it is clearly darker in color and softer. It could be fill of a possible pit. There is evidence of ash. We are using water sieve, because we think there could be organic material in the pit. We dry sieved the portion immediately beneath the water sieved portion. S side of pit has a clear cut. Is the soft soil with a high percentage of black ash more pit fill, or a new floor layer that will go under the area to be cleaned to the S (i.e., the rest of the room)? The ash is not limited to the surface. We have different lenses of fill in the pit. We'll take off the top (darker) lens in this basket. This uniformly ashy soil is clearly differentiated from the next lens down which has clumpy red soil with denser clumps of ash. We are sieving 100%. Small finds: glass handle - from dry sieve needle: came out with trowel.
