Stratum:   Pit fill with 30% inclusions: pulled out large terracotta pieces; large chunks of charcoal. The soil is dark with ash, markedly different from the red soil, which is cut by the pit.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. Bottom slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are removing the second lens of fill of the pit (first top lens = B 5004), using small pick. We are sieving 100%.
We are coming down on stones and large tile fragments. Several of these were excavated out in this basket, but when we closed the basket, other stones and tile pieces still line the bottom of the pit. Note: based on later observation: the pit is not lined.
This soil is soft and dark with charcoal and ash. When this soil changed to uniformly reddish, we closed this basket because we had identified this reddish soil as the deposit that the pit cuts. This basket, together with B 5004, therefore, is the entire contents of a pit which cuts the reddish soil surrounding it.
20% of the fill will be water sieved. The remainder was dry sieved.
Small finds:
coin: found in dry sieve, no elev.
Nail: found in dry sieve.
