Stratum:   Glass, large tiles, bone; small pieces of mortar and carbon in sieve; stones range from medium cobbles, mostly sub-rounded spherical with all other types, some boulders; total inclusions about 50%
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are digging an area of blacker earth in Room E, E of the drain, next to W16 (i.e., on the E side of Room E). Cigarette butt found near the top of the context.
The deposit looks like it may be a pit, so we are dry sieving everything but the first shovel-full.
We are digging the pit in section to create a scarp and see if any stratigraphy is present. We have reached the bottom in the N half without finding multiple layers.
The bottoms is a hard, red soil. This red soil extends under W16, but the pit does not. In the center E, the pit does not meet W16.
The scarp showed that there was only one layer, so we are continuing to excavate the blacker earth.
In excavating the S half of the deposit, we found many sub-rounded spherical large cobbles and boulders. We have determined that these stones belong to the context of the pit.
The pit is deeper to the S.
Among the stones in the S half of the pit, we found a burnt piece of marble, ca. 10 by 7 cm, as well as a piece ca. 6 by 3 cm. All being sent for washing.
We found 92 roof tiles, mixed Corinthian and Sicilian types, weighing 17.30 kg.
