Description:   The soil color is light greyish yellow. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We excavated this section to begin answering the questions of whether this was an interior or exterior space and its relation with the byzantine house (?) to the south.
In the field it was unclear how enclosed this space was, as the north and east sections were missing. There was also a wall running E-W which possibly differentiated this area from that to the north. The workmen began excavating before really scraping down and defining earlier and later features. The clayey quality of the soil made it possible that this was not only a floor but also included sealant from the walls and roof which would have gone over woven reeds, etc. During excavation, however, it was not possible to discern a difference between a clay floor and remains of walls.
Thus the W and S walls, which seem contemporary due to floor level, could have defined an interior space with 2 walls we are missing. Map from the 60's excavation does not show any traces of other walls enclosing this space, however.
Excavation revealed a layer of mixed small cobbles, pebbles, clay sherds, and roof tiles. In later excavation we found a second possible entrance at the northern part of the N-S wall, which could also tie together this level with 5186-- Pottery dates for 5186 are also frankish, but possibly earlier than this context.
A few stones showing through this level were later revealed to be lying in a single level on top of the soil, for which there was no discernable reason.
