Description:   Structure materials: 2 ceramic drain segments: flat-bottomed, flat-sided. Material size: 1.16L, 0.26W, 0.12H. Material finish: 2 stones remain from possibile lining of drain cut. Material bonding: cement. Features: incorporation of marble architectural element?.
Notes:   Ceramic drain: it seemed to incline to the west and towards the well of the 1961 house courtyard. It was made up of 2 pieces and all sides were flat. In addition, an architectural member, perhaps an architrave, was immediately east of the drain and in line with the drain. It was 6 cm into the ground at its lowest point. There were also two stones on the northern side of the drain, which may have lined the drain pit. We imagine that there were probably more. The drain rests on 5191, the cleaning level.
As for the marble architectural member, we are not sure if it was placed here to show the line of the drain during the 1961 excavation. Also we are not clear whether or not the drain goes through the entryway in the wall. From our measurements, the drain, which was 26 cm wide, would not fit through the wall entryway, which was 23 cm wide, but the south end of the wall seems to be displaced.
On earlier plans, the drain looks longer as if more of the drain went east towards the road, although there is no mention of it in the 1961 notebooks. There is a similar drain to the south (N.B. 229, page 192, drawing on page 188), but this Roman drain is obviously different.
