Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish red. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are now doing a pass across the portion of our area north of Wall 5216, except for the strip along Wall 5284 that we have just excavated (5286). We hope to determine the potential contexts of which this layer of our area is comprised and how it relates to the context 5286. This layer is harder than what we came down to when we excavated 5286 and we believed that 5292 overlies 5286, although it is uncertain. We will arbitrarily stop on the north end at wall 5285, which has previously marked the north end of our area. Excavation farther north will be hampered by the accumulated pile of rocks which has been placed there due to the 1960s excavations and the activities of the last two weeks. We are strting to arrive at soil similar to that from context 5286. On the west end, about 0.20m east of the scarp, the soil is harder and has more inclusions. Also, this hard soil extends into the center of our area at certain points, and we think it cuts the somewhat soft soil that we have been encountering generally. The harder and soft soils may represent distinct deposits. At the east end, the patch of clayey soil excavated in 5286 goes under both the hard and soft soils just to the west. We are stopping here so that we can excavate the soft dirt west of the clay but east of the hard soil.
