Lot:   Lot 2008-028
Stratum:   inclusions: 25% medium to coarse pebbles with some cobbles, mostly subrounded spherical to tabular; rare small chunks of carbon
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context is an area of softer soil north of W23. It lies between contexts 5110 and 5105 from last season. Later note: this context has been expanded to the soil underlying 5110 and 5105.
The floor dug as 5314 lay over part of the original extent of this context, the area north of W23 in the center.
At least one of the tiles in this context is diamond shaped.
We have decided to expand this context to include the fill below last year's context 5105, which is the same as the other fill in this context. We also removed the baulk left last year between 5105 and 5106. We reached the bottom of the context on the west side and found the continuation of W20 north of W23.
We found some tesserae and are sending them to the museum.
We have also found some chunks of white concrete.
Because of the interaction with the continuation of W20, the bottom in the west side of the trench is significantly higher than in the east side. The soil beneath the west side is harder than this context with more clay and carbon chunks.
We found a burnt olive pit.
We have also expanded this context to include the fill below last year's 5110, which has more ceramic inclusions but is the same soil.
We found part of a terracotta figurine from the sieve, which we are sending to the museum, and we are also sending 2 lamp fragments.
In the center, we have come down on soil that is softer and has more ceramic inclusions than that under the west of this context, but it is slightly harder and has fewer stones and ceramic inclusions than this context did.
The far east side also came down on harder soil. The softer soil begins 1.80m from the west wall (W22) and ends 1.05m from the east side of the trench. We believe the softer soil may represent a pit that was cut by the trench, since the softer soil seems to stretch under the fill to the north. The bottom of the trench also slopes up on the east.
We have also revealed a stone in W23 approx. 2.25m from the west wall (W22) with a length of 0.44m and extending a max of 0.10m out of W23.
The context for the foundation trench cut is 5239.
This context contained 232 tiles weighing 41.7kg.
