Stratum:   During excavation we noticed two distinct colors of the soil which were dark reddish brown and dark yellowish brown. It seemed to be mostly dark yellowish brown with patches of dark reddish brown. Total inclusions was 65%: 30% ash, 20% fine to coarse pe
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   During excavations we noticed quite a lot of ash in the soil. This ash ranged from black to white in color. At least one small chunk (0.15m) of lime was also found in the soil. This context may turn out to be a lens rather than a pit. The pickman dug west to east. After one pass in the west it was clear that he came to a new context at least in some places because the new surface has far less inclusions. In the center on the first pass he met a cluster of cobbles which were removed. In the east the soil had much greater percentage (50%) of ash than the west (20%) - the change was not abrupt, therefore, no new context. In the center of this context digging revealed the top of 4 stones in alignment with the stone that juts out from the center of W23. The west face of these four stones is flat. There is a break between these stones and W23 where foundation trench (cut 5329) is. We suspect these stones and the stone jutting out of W23 create a wall (with break) that will divide lower contexts into two rooms east and west. Guy Sanders preliminarily identifies the metal piece found in sieving as a belt buckle. The bottom of this context reveals three distinct areas which we anticipate digging as three contexts: one to the west of the dividing wall, one to the east of the dividing wall, and one which occurs at the south end of the wall and cuts into the other two. We will dig this last one first (context 5365) because it cuts the other two. The west area is reddish soil with charcoal inclusions, similar to the soil of 5358. The east area is greyer and harder.
