Stratum:   Inclusions are fine to large pebbles, angular tabular
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: Limestone, tile fragments. Material size: varies from 0.10 to 0.43m. Material finish: Roughly hewn. Material construction: Random coursed, but wall consists of one course. Material bonding: none.
Notes:   This wall was sitting on a layer of yellowish brown soil. There was no bonding material; the dirt was used to situate the stones in their place. During the removal of these roughly hewn stones, we exposed a much more refined stone just north of the intersection of Walls 5284 and 5285 (coord. ). Only its top portion has been exposed, but it has the appearance of a square. The soil beneath the walls has much less pebbles but more charcoal than the soil directly to its west. At the north end of our wall removal, we exposed some rough hewn stones extending E-W into the north scarp of the pit excavated in 5356 (coord. ). Just north north of that, we discovered another stone in alignment with our excavated wall; it is located just south of the E-W wall framing the north end of our area (coord. ). Beneath the wall, we came down on a compact layer of silty clay with many carbon and tile inclusions, relatively free of pebbles/cobbles. The stones that we discovered might belong to an earlier phase. We will leave them for now. 1 box of pottery was collected.
It appears that the easternmost block of the E-W wall to the North is overlying one of the blocks revealed by the removal of 5360. This could confirm the earlier phasing of the blocks set at a lower elevation.
