Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a layer of pebbly fill extending from northwest and north of pit 5356 and south to and beyond wall 5285. A coin is found at 263.42E, 1029.43 N, el. 84.92. As we excavate, we expose similar soil beneath. As we get to wall 5285, we reveal a stone that had until this time been covered by our deposit 5363. There is an even more discrete contrast between what we are currently excavating and the soil revealed by the removal of structure 5360, which is darker and at a slightly higher elevation. We continue along the south edge of wall 5285 and about 0.20 m south to the south of it. We also began to do another pass west of our pit 5356, excavating similar reddish soil. This pass reveals another course of the wall at the north. It also reveals some flat lying tile fragments, as well as many more tiles lying askew. The transition in tile inclusions is clear. It is also more noticeable that the block on the west edge of Wall 5285 is in alignment with the Turkish Wall 5217.
After further discussion and consultation, we believe that the soil beneath removed wall 5360 cuts the soft soil revealed by this context. We also notice that similar soft soil continues east of Wall 5360 and north of our E-W wall. We will clean into these areas to determine more specific relationships and precisely what it is that the soil under wall 5360 divides. We plan to excavate the soil beneath wall 5360.
This is modern backfill. See 5369.
