Stratum:   Carbon, rooftile (1%), fine pebbles (2%), medium angular pebbles 2% (some spherical, some tabular)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 5360 is the removal of the deposit on which the wall excavated as 5360 was built. To the west, the deposit is defined by a sharp cut, though it looks likely tht the fill into which it was dug has been removed out of sequence. To the east, the relationship with the abutting deposit is not clear. It is decided to dig 1/2 the deposit to investigate further.
In excavating the first 1/2 of the deposit, the following observations can be made:
1. Removing a skin of soil revealed the continuation of a surface from the east, that may be a floor associated with the building ( ).
2. An accidental overdigging of the southern end of the deposit revealed a much softer deposit underneath the surface (possibly the floor described in 1). This softer deposit seems to be within a clear cut to the east, suggesting it may be fill of some kind, perhaps fill in a robbing trench, as the stones revealed by the removal of Wall 5360 seem to be part of an earlier wall.
3. To the west, the deposit is also bounded by a clear cut. This cut, however, has been the source of much consternation. It was realized that the cut was produced by archaeological excavation in the 1960s. This action was obscured by backfill in room ( ), which it abuts.
It was decided to remove the second half of the skin of soil that makes up context 5360.
