Stratum:   inclusions: 5% subangular pebbles, small (around .01 to .03 cm.) pottery
Description:   The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is soft. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: rough-faced limestone. Material size: .40 l. x .25 w. x .20 h. max block size. Material finish: rough-faced. Material construction: random coursed. Material bonding: none.
Notes:   The aim in removing this wall was to expose the same surface with a plaster-like consistency underlying wall 5375. This would suggest that the two walls were made to truncate their N-S running neighbor (5394) roughly contemporarily. As we took the wall down, a great deal of organic material appeared in the form of large (.02-.05cm diameter) roots disturbing a harder surface with some cobbles. No major observable consequences for this, but definitely speaks to the loose construction of this part of the wall. The pebbled surface exposed upon removing contexts 5382, 5383, and 5386 to the north (context #5401) does not yet appear upon completing the removal of the stone and dirt top layer of 5376 which could suggest that these spaces were in different phases of use prior to the construction of wall 5375.
Alicia has suggested that what we saw exposed of walls 5375 and 5376 prior to excavation probably reflects foundations rather than the tops of walls. This seems perfectly feasible, but it would be nice to see foundation trenches for these wall bases, since their construction appears to be so loose that it would surely need a foundation trench to keep it together. The removal of the stones and loose dirt of this context resulted in the exposure of four new contexts: 1) a light reddish brown clayey soil adhering to the northern strip of the former wall pedestal, 2) a layer of compacted, darker soil containing roof tiles and cobbles, 3) a small swath of dark, compacted soil with a few charcoal inclusions, and 4) an ashy layer. Perhaps the relationship of the ashy layer to the wall will become clearer once the remaining stones and roof tiles are removed.
Later note: context 5392 removed a matrix of soil overlying foundation rubble (5395) associated with the N-S running wall (5394.
