Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand. Structure materials: poros limestone. Material size: (max) 1.10 x .56 x .58 (min) .37 x .34 x .14. Material finish: roughly hewn. Material construction: random coursed. Material bonding: none.
Notes:   We opened a context for this wall in the register because it forms the reference point for many of our descriptions and interpretations. It also rests atop foundations (5395) that predate it and represent a different phase of construction - an earlier one. It has an orientation that runs slightly eastward of the foundations' course which supports the idea that their constructions were separate actions. As far as we can discern, in the pre-1960s excavations of this area, as well as on the 1961 plan, this was drawn as a single wall and was not given a number.
No floor or foundation trench has yet to be discovered associated with 5394. Most of the stratigraphy W of the wall was dug out in the 1960s and the martyrs left give little information.
Additional notes by Jess Paga, 20.4.10:
Following the excavation of contexts directly to the East of NS wall 5394, the difference between the later (or upper) courses and the earlier (or lower) courses was made clearer. We had not dismantled the later courses yet, because it was not very clear which stones belonged to which phase.
Several (at least 4) of the blocks used in the construction of 5394 are spolia -- at least two, if not three, come from the "bouleuterion" of the South Stoa, directly to the North -- these blocks are cut from the same stone and have curved faces. Another spoliated blocks has two swallow-tail clamp cuttings, similar to those used in the "bouleuterion." Another spoliated block is half of a Doric capital, possibly Early Classical in its echinus profile.
We threw the blocks of the upper course of wall 5394 into a pit direclty to the North of the current trench, in a depression between the Byzantine levels currently under excavation in North of Nezi, and the South Stoa. The lower courses of wall 5394 employ smaller stones in random courses. The lower (earlier) wall = 6789.
Note that this wall equals wall 76 from NB 230 (1961, section G).
