Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. It is clayey silt. Structure materials: limestone, marble. Material size: 0.17 x 0.18 x 0.16; 0.35 x 0.26 x 0.18m. Material finish: dressed face. Material construction: random coursed. Material bonding: none. Features: none.
Notes:   Structure 5442 is a N-S rubble wall with dressed faces. Its N extent can be seen, at which point it abuts structure 5443, and E-W wall. Its S exten is likely seen, though surviving later courses may lie under fill further S. This wall was revealed during 1960's excavations, though not drawn in on any plans. Its W face abuts the robbing trench of Structure 5479, an earlier N-S wall. The full surviving height of this wall is as yet unrevealed; maximum current visible height is 0.30m. It is unclear at present whether structure 5442 predates structure 5443, or vice versa.
Later notes - SG and WB (10/4/09)
In order to continue excavating in the northern room, necessary to remove several contexts in the courtyard of the Byzantine house including wall 5442. 100% of soil from this wall sieved. Wall 5442 excavated following removal of east and south foundation trenches (6055/6056 and 6060/6061), two fills on west side (6064, 6067) and one fill on east side (6059). A piece of marble architectural revetement (rounded at one end - 0.16m l x 0.15m w x 0.07m th.) in wall. Coin 2009-39 recovered during removal of wall 5442. Northern section of this wall (area which equals small part of width of wall 5443), no foundation trench and it appears to have been built on the surface. The southern section of wall 5442 dug much deeper down. A glass base also found. Hopefully coin and pottery recovered from removal of this wall will provide terminus post quem for its construction. Difficult to say at this point relationship between wall 5442 and wall 5443. Foundation of wall 5442 labeled as structure 6069.
