Context:   5460

Date:   2008/05/13
Stratum:   15%: fine to large pebbles (angular tabular and platy).
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The deposit 5460 is a layer of fill revealed by the removal of other superimposed layers of leveling fill underneath the floor (5416). It extends southward along Wall 5284 and is truncated to the west by the digging of a pit and that pit's excavation in the 1960s. To the north, the deposit 5460 abuts the layer of fill removed as deposit 5458; the removal of 5458 revealed a dense horizon of roof tiles that may represent the collapse of a building. In the section of the scarp, this tile horizon can be seen to continue toward the south underneath the fill deposit 5460. It is expected that the removal of 5460 will reveal moreof tis tile layer, Deposits 5458 and 5460 seem both to be layer of fill overlying the tile layer, but they are being treated as a separate context because 5460 is lighter in color and more compact than 5458. The removal of 5458 is revealing a continuation of the debris layer, but only on the western edge of the scarp. It also has revealed a cut into the tiley layer running parallel to Wall 5284 at a distance of 0.30-0.47 m from the wall. This may represent the foundation trench for Wall 5484, cut through the tily layer. At the south end of the deposit where it meets wall 5216 and the deposit is preserved, the tiley layer is consistent with that which begins south of Wall 5411 and runs south along our posited foundation trench. This tiley layer is also cut by the foundation trench 0.30m west of Wall 5284. The soil in the corner of Walls 5284 and 5216 has an ashy film on top.
