Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Foundation trench excavation for Wall 5284: We are excavating this trench, following the line running N-S at the east end of our tile layer. The first pass exposed another tile course of the wall. The fill of the foundation trench for Wall 5284 is bounded on the E by the wall itself and on the west by a clear cut into the tiley layer revealed by the removal of the fill deposits 5458 and 5460. The fill of the foundation trench runs northward up to the wall 5421 and abuts it. Excavation of the fill of the trench has revealed an additional course of Wall 5284 at a lowe elevation; this course is below the elevation at which the cut was detected, a likely below ground. The deposit of the trench does not run under Wall 5216 at the south end, or at least it does not seem to do so after the second pass. There is a distinct transition in soil under Wall 5216; the soil becomees oranger and harder. To the north, at the juncture of Walls 5411 and 5284, we removed softer soil from a cut slightly lower in elevation than the rest of the foundation trench. This could be the east end of a foundation trench for the south face of Wall 5411, but this is currently uncertain.
Tiles; 135 FRGT, 13.3 KG
The removal of the fill fro the foundation trench on the west side of wall 5284 reveals a clear floor surdace. This floo, which continues westward under the tiley fill into which the trench was cut, representes the bottom of the foundation trench.
