Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   5480 is the deposit of a pit found under 5428. The SW edge was visible at the bottom of 5428 (and also marks the N eddge of 5469), but it was unclear what its nature was at the time. Some exploration after 5469 made us realize that we were dealing with a different deposit (thus the S edge moved further S in the plans of 5469 and 5480). However, we could not find the E edge of this deposit. We thus dug 5475 and found this edge, although this was stratigraphically out of order. Lastly, it appears that this pit also cut through the very SE edge of our circular cut for the pithoi (#5488).
About 5 cm down on the N end, many large fragments of tile appered, although the fill continues underneath. A field test flotation was taken out of the soil: no seeds, no organics, except burnt charcoal.
We hit a hard layer at the bottom that was flat. There are many cobbles and tiles on the north side of the pit, spilling out of the scarp- possibly this relates to fill in the circular cut for the pithos.
A very clear white layer is visible about 0.15 m below the upper edge, and this appears to be a floor. It is visible on all sides of the pit except the pithos cut. This floor extends out from the NE edge of the pit, but its edges are clearly cut through the pit. Hence, it appears that we may dug out a little too far in the NE, most likely due to root action breaking up the soil here.
Tiles: 7.5 kg in 3L pieces. The amount of pottery found within implies a trash pit.
