Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish yellow. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Upon reaching the upper layers associated with the tile built pithos in our large pit in the surrounding ring that most probably represents the cut made for the pithos's construction, we decided that the fill from within the pit should be excavated as it represents the latest context in our trench.
Part of this pit had been excavated in the first session (5167), which was all deemed to be backfill dumped in by the 1960s excavations-- upon inspection of our deposit, it has been determined that this backfill continues-- the soil is yellowish clay which is not normal for well bottoms, and the surrounding scarp shows that the soil at this level should be red.
A separate, browner deposit has appeared against the tiles of the pithos and is different from the yellowish fill. Perhaps this is fill that dates to the period when the pithos went out of use and untouched by the 1960s. This will be excavated separately.
As digging continued, more bones were found, especailly portions of two articulated dog skeletons, potentially complete. This brings into question the idea that this fill is 1960s backfill. Also, the deeper we dig, the more yellow clay we find. It is difficult to believe that all this clay could come from excavated Frankish floor somewhere dug in the 1960s.
A third party articulate dog skeleton was found.
As digging continued, it appears that the browner deposit against the tiles of the pithos were cut through, as their edges are circular. However, the circular edges of this deposit do not correspond to the edges of our original pit, implying that two holes were cut down.
As digging continued, more of the W circumference of our pithos has come to light. A layer of clay on the inside has been preserved here, and we assume once covered the inside of the pithos, probably to waterproof it.
The entire circumference is now revealed. Also, the bottom of our bothroi has finally been reached. A different fill came to light, which appeared to be the same as the brown deposit on the side. We will assume that this borwn fill represents the original fill deliberately (?- it does not appear to be runoff as the soil from the scarp is much redder in color) dumped in after the pithos went out of use.
It is still unclear why the edge of the bothros on the S does not correspond with the edge of the pit made through the brown deposit. Possibly collapse of tiles caused the diggers to move slightly to the N and continue digging?
