Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NE. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context is intended for cleaning in the area east of where context Structure 5360 had been removed. Last year, this area had been covered by plastic tarp, which we removed. The 1960s excavations had also done various work in this space, although its natures is not fully known at this time. The 1960s excavations did leave a martyr for a yellow floor running E-W along the southern edge of this space. Currently, the yellow team (Cat Person and Anne Feltovich) are covering the area south of the martyr; we will cover the north.
So far the cleaning has covered a tiley patch on its north end just south of the E-W Wall (# ). The first martyr consists of a yellow clay floor running E-W, which the 1960s excavations left to mark the floor to the north and a robbing trench to the south. Further south sill, another larger martyr for the robbing trench runs E-W along the "Room bounded ono west side by 5284," which constitues a sizeable drop in elevation. The small martyr will be left up for the time being, until the robbing trench is thoroughly excavated. The tile layer continues west along E-W Wall (# ) as we proceed. The tiles underlie this wall. They are overlaid by less tiley soil to the east. The wall will have to be removed, but first we must clean north of it. We will simply expand this context north; no new context number.
Preliminary research into the excavation records for the 1961 seaon yielded the following information about our area. In NB 229, 190, William Berg III discusses the uncovering of a hard earth floor enclosed by Wall 38, 39 ad 40, and Wall 61-G. He interpretes the earth floor as a feature associated with three steps, ascending from West to East. This floor was discovered at 84.975. No other comments pertain to the excavation of this particular area in NB 229, and the date for the entry (June 8, 1961) is two days before the end of te 1961 excavation season (June 10). A plan of the area was drawn on p. 188, though walls 36 and 40 do not seem to be to scale.
Yellow's context 5502 was a related context taken south of the yellow clay martyr. Now that their context is finished, it is our responsibilit to continue excavation in this area once they have excavated their robbing trench. We uncover the yellow clay floor left as a martyr for the clay floor excavated to the North in the 1960s (this is the martyr north of the robbing trench martyr). We are exposing more tile layer, heading south, and sloping gradually. East of our E-W Wall (# ), our tile layer ceased, but we uncover more wall blocks from beneath the soil.
