Title:   Robbing trench fill north of martyr
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5506
Page:   0
Date:   2008/05/15
Stratum:   The soil was mostly silty sand, but in the west end of the robbing trench was a patch of soil that was primarily silt. 40% total inclusions: 10% tile, 15% pebbles fine to coarse, rounded to angular, spherical to tabular, 5% cobbles, subrounded to angular
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   During cleaning operations 5474 and 5501 to expose the martyr and the room north of the martyr (excavated in the 1960s) a robbing trench was revealed between the martyr and the room. It was probably dug to remove parts of a E-W running wall (wall 40 in NB 229, now 5519) perpendicular to wall 5485. The director remembers that C.K. Williams describes this robbing trench in his excavations notebooks. The robbing trench is bounded on the south by martyr 5502, on the west by a hard, red surface projecting from under wall 5485, on the north to the west end by a 1960s martyr of a yellowish floor excavated except for this martyr from the room to the north. On the North to the east of the robbing trench is the cut of the robbing trench in the subfloor of the room to the north. On the east of the robbing trench are the few blocks remaining of the wall robbed out by the trench. Panos began digging the robbing trench from west to east.
The soil was a consistent color for the most part and was mostly silty sand. However, in the west end of the robbign trench was a patch of soil that was primarily silt. A round bluish glass disk was found (E269.31, N1027.55, 84.61 elev.) which has an impressed decoration on one face. It could be from a ring. Panos came down on a pocket of dark grey soil roughly center of the trench but going under the martyr - actually it runs from roughly center to the east end of the trench, still mostly under the martyr. The bottom of the trench was distinguished by a layer of harder, reddish soil which appears to continue under the surface to the north of the trench. Under the fill were revealed two white stone blocks - one at the east end under the large block of the robbed out wall, and one at the west end. The west side of the trench is bordered by an area of fill (5514) over the foundations of a wall perpendicular to wall 5485.
Note: The pottery from this fill was accidentally placed in the bucket with the pottery from fill 5506, however, this might not be considered contamination as the robbing trench (5506) was cut into the martyr (5502) and thus the pottery of 5502 is earlier than the robbing trench.
