Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a robbing trench running N-S north-east of the corners of Walls 5411 and 5284, from about 1028.00N to 1030.00N. This area was characterized by a distinctive patch of black soil running N-S between Wall stones in apparent alignment at 1028.00N and 1030.00N, roughly 266.50E. This trench runs west of the tile surface exposed in Context 5501. The first pass reveals more stones under Wall 5485; these stones may represent an eastward extension of 5411; yet, they also may have been in the same wall as these stones framing the north end of the robbing trench, for they are in alignment. The course of stones revealed at the southern edge of the robbing trench has masonry characterized by roughly hewn blocks and roof tile. This similar to the material in the random courses of wall 5411. The bottom of the robbing trench and 5100 trench cut 5514 are the southernmost extent of a robbing trench that extends northward to 1030.00. The segments of the trench that are further north than deposit 5510 and cut 5514 were excavated in the 1960s.
The bottom elevation of the southern most portion is slightly higher (roughly 0.04m) than the other segrments. The bottom of the trench also features a cluster of stones (roughly 0.25 by 0.20 by 0.15m) that may represent a pier or earlier wall.
