Category:   Deposit

Context:   5518

Date:   2008/05/16
Lot:   Lot 2008-055
Stratum:   Fine to large pebbles, all sizes. 15%.
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a deposit of fill that is perhaps 1960s excavation backfill. We pull out a large yellow glazed base; this suggests that we are not dealing with backfill since we would not expect the 1960s excavators to leave a sherd of that size and quality in backfill. The deposit does not underlie the wall directly to the east (wall 38). We pull out many bones and other large pottery fragments and stones. We exposed two stones directly in the deposit cut; these stones may mark a significant transition.
The pit si bounded to the west by the vertical wall of the stair case and on the east by Wall 38 ( ). To the north, it meets wall 61G ( ). To the south, the boundary is less clear, though the first pass within the pit revealed 2 boulders ( ; ) which may represent the boundary of the pit. It will become clear as we proceed whether these stones represent the boundary of the pit or should be included in the fill. There are several other boulders of comparable size within the pit that seem to be part of the fill itself. The deposit is characterized by its dark, very soft soil matrix. Excavation of the pit is also producing a fair amount of bone and large pottery fragments. A small complete iron vessel, possiblty a crucible, was also recovered from this fill. A coin was found in the sieve from dirt from the first pass. Removal of some of the deposit has revealed two blocks that seem either to go under or be part of Wall 61G. The face of the
iron crucible is 84.39 el., 270.86E, 1030.08N.
This appears to be in alignment with some blocks further to the west that sit at the bottom of the robbing trench ( ) for wall 71 ( ). A complete byzantine roof tile is also uncoverd, it is resting nearly flat, so we investiage whether or not the tile is sitting on an interface or part of the fill. It is determined that it is part of the fill, and it is removed.
Directly after removing some smaller tile fragments, we find an iron adze head; south of it an iron disk is found. Both are packed in soil and taken to the museum. The rocks previously found at the south are lodged in the soft soil of this deposit; they are removed.
